With all of the wild weather we have been experiencing, we thought it would be a good idea to review some winter driving tips. First, make sure that your wiper blades are fresh and new. They should be changed at least every 6 months or so to keep the rubber parts soft enough to cleanly wipe the moisture away. We have found that windshield products such as Rain- X, etc make a big difference in your wipers’ ability to clear the windshield. Always make sure your tires are properly inflated; under inflated tires can make vehicle handling difficult while over-inflated tires can lose traction. Always give yourself extra room between you and the vehicle in front of you….stopping distances increase greatly when the pavement is wet. With increased stopping distances and visibility issues, it is a good idea to slow down when the weather is wet, windy or foggy. If you are headed into the snow country, always be sure to take the tire chains with you. The weather can change rapidly in the mountains and you do not want to have to buy chains to get home. Verify that your vehicle is compatible with tire chains. Some vehicles have such a close fit between the tire and the wheelwell that the manufacturers do not allow you to install chains. Keep in mind that the speed limit when chain control is in effect is only 30 miles per hour. Make sure that you are well off the road when installing chains or adjusting them. It is better to be stuck in deep snow than to get hit by another motorist because you were out in the road way. Remember that even with 4WD or tire chains, the stopping distances on snow are very long. Keep a large gap between you and the vehicle in front, use your brakes sparingly and drive smoothly. Safe travels!
